Our own Winning Story outside OLX

At the moment there's a Winningstory campaign running in all OLX branches around the world, with nice rewards to those participating. Don't forget to join in!

While I do have some winning stories myself on using OLX, I found the one most meaningful happened before I become OLX user instead, and it become one of the key reasons why I decided to join OLX later on.

My #winningstory happened when my wife decided to bought, on her initiative, a new baby stroller for our youngest kid. While I do understand this newer model has smaller size, which fits nicely into our city car's tiny baggage space, we already have two strollers! So I asked her to keep one and sell the rest, and she then advertised it on some local newspapers.

Among the few responses we received, there's one from this lady who's really interested to have a look, and we made appointment to meet right away. When she came, we're quite surprised to find out that she was coming on a motorbike with both her husband, and her daughter.

However the reason why she bring her 5 y.o. daughter along is to see which of the strollers would fit her the best, as she has this special medical condition which makes her can barely moves.

After further conversation we discovered that the father works as a security guard, and the mother works as book keeper in a small hotel. Even though the medication costs of their daughter are covered by BPJS Kesehatan, Indonesia's national health insurance program, they have to wait like 4-6 hours in each visit to the hospital, sometimes even more. During the waiting their daughter would usually get tired (obviously), but she's already too heavy for her mother to carry, thus they need a good sturdy stroller for her to sleep on. That's also why, despite having only a motorbike, they prefer to bought our big strollers instead of the more compact version.

Seeing there's already three persons riding the motorbike, my wife and me decided we'd deliver the stroller to their place instead, the next day. Over the night however, looks like my wife and me have this change of mind about selling the stroller. Yes we could always use the extra money from selling the stroller, but it looks like there's a greater purpose awaits for the stroller (and the money).

So on the next day, we deliver the stroller into its new owner, and we even include a soft mattress pad for the stroller as free extra, something we previously think we wouldn't sell.

We then get into a discussion on how the family would be able to carry the stroller around on their motorbike, should they can't get/afford a car to carry the daughter for medical checks. We both think that a simple add-on construction to the bike, like those used by AC repairmen to carry their portable ladder, would also work for the stroller.

When it came to the payment time, and the family hand over the amount of money we initially asked for, we politely hand it back and say it's our contribution to help fund the motorbike modification work. They were speechless, but very thankful.

In the end, while we don't get any money from the transaction but I think we win something more precious. The whole episode itself feels like a wake-up slap to our face, where we experience first hand, that something less meaningful to us, could be someone else's treasure.

Having experience that, so when the offer to join OLX Indonesia arrived, and that OLX stands to facilitate the same kind of exchange I experienced in the story above, I gladly joined. (byms)
